FSA Certification demonstrates commitment to the highest standards of professional competence. It is open to attorneys, police officers and trainers, and forensic consultants. All applicants must complete a rigorous oral or written exam and pay relevant fees. Re-certification exams must be passed every three years. There is no grandfathering or substitute credentialing.
Written examinations are given in groups after seminars at no additional charge. Attendance at the seminars offered by FSA is highly recommended but not required. Oral exams are given by web conference. A web cam must be positioned to verify that the test taker is not referring to notes, a computer screen, or receiving auditory assistance.
The exam covers all the areas listed on the home page, with a heavy emphasis on applying statistical and scientific concepts to existing studies involving sobriety testing. Eye movement science (pertinent to the HGN test) constitutes about 18% of the test items. The test format is multiple choice, but with no specified number of correct answers. In other words, all of the items may be accurate, some of them accurate, or none of them. There are no “all of the above” or “none of the above” options that help the test taker eliminate possible answers. Thus, the test taker is given no clues as to whether one answer is right by the other options. Effectively, there are approximately 220 independent items.
Certification benefits: 1) an oversized (11” X 15”), individually printed and signed diploma documenting your certification; 2) use of the CFA logo and phrase “CFA-certified” on advertisements, web pages, and business cards; 3) listing on the CFA website with your name, phone, and link to your website. Unlike generic DWI referral sites, these referrals will know you are one of a handful of professionals nationwide who have sought out and earned the most advanced training and credentialing. The introductory cost for all these benefits is $39.95/mo. or $479/year. Cancel any time. Logo colors can be matched to your website. You must pass the exam before you can enroll.
